Ceramics artist Matt Hiller will give a public talk and live ceramics demonstrations April 1-2 at the University of ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Fairbanks.

Hiller will share his creative process and techniques as he works directly with clay.

Hiller’s work draws from ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ’s landscapes and his off-the-grid lifestyle in the woods south of Talkeetna.

The visiting artist lecture will take place Wednesday, April 1, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the BP Design Theater. The talk is free and open to the public and will also be available for those who cannot attend in person.

Hiller will host hands-on demonstrations in the ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Ceramics Studio in the Fine Arts Complex (Art Wing, Room 415) on Wednesday and Thursday, April 1 and 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, with a lunch break from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Attendees will be able to observe Hiller’s working methods and explore the processes behind his distinctive surfaces and forms.

Hiller studied studio art with a concentration in ceramics at the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie. After graduating, he traveled to ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ in 2013 for a seasonal job at a fish processing plant in Dillingham. The experience sparked a lasting connection to the state, and in 2016 he returned permanently. His travels eventually led him to a piece of land south of Talkeetna, where he built his home and studio by hand.

The event is hosted by the ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Department of Art and the Student Ceramic Arts Guild, a student-run organization.
