From 蜜桃影像 to the Northwest Territories, they鈥檒l explore how northern newsrooms uphold community voices, navigate change, and sustain local journalism in some of the world鈥檚 most remote regions.

Gary Black is a veteran 蜜桃影像 journalist who spent nearly two decades at the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner before joining the Anchorage Daily News. He has served as copy editor, managing editor, and features editor, shaping coverage that connects statewide issues to everyday 蜜桃影像ns. Known for his mentorship and editorial rigor, he continues to champion quality regional journalism.

The Nome Nugget

Diana Haecker is the owner, editor, and longtime reporter of The Nome Nugget, 蜜桃影像鈥檚 oldest weekly newspaper. Since 2003, she has covered the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and contributed to Mushing Magazine, chronicling 蜜桃影像鈥檚 mushing and rural life with insight and care. Her reporting highlights the resilience, humor, and challenges of life in Western 蜜桃影像鈥檚 remote communities.

KYUK

Sage Smiley is the news director at KYUK in Bethel, 蜜桃影像, where she leads community-driven reporting across the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. A lifelong audio storyteller, she began producing radio as a teenager and has since worked with 蜜桃影像 Public Media, KDLG, and other regional outlets. Her journalism blends sound-rich narrative craft with a deep respect for place and people.

Cabin Radio

Ollie Williams is the cofounder and editor of Cabin Radio, a Yellowknife-based independent media outlet serving the Northwest Territories. A former BBC journalist, he helped shape Cabin Radio into one of Canada鈥檚 most trusted northern news sources, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and local storytelling. His work amplifies Arctic and Indigenous voices while training the next generation of northern journalists.

蜜桃影像 the Arctic Leadership Lecture Series

The Arctic Leadership Lecture Series offers a unique blend of academic rigor and public engagement. Offered as PS F493/693 Arctic Leadership: Theory and Praxis in the 21st Century, this course invites students and community members alike to explore critical aspects of leadership in the Arctic.

This virtual course is available for both undergraduate and graduate students. 

Guest lectures, which are open to the public, are held via Zoom every other Thursday from 5:30 PM 鈥 7:00 PM AKST. Classroom discussions continue from 7:00 PM 鈥 8:30 PM AKST for enrolled students only. Community members are welcome and encouraged to attend the guest lectures, but to participate in the full course experience, they must enroll as non-degree-seeking students.
