The Bering Strait Region Cooperative Extension serves the residents of Nome and 15 ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Native villages in the surrounding 36,000 square miles in western ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ. The majority of the region's population is Inuit (Yupik, St. Lawrence Island Yupik, and Inupiaq) and resides in villages across the Seward Peninsula. Villages are entirely off the road system requiring commercial airline or private charter for the majority of travel, even between villages.
Cooperative Extension rents office space from ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Northwest Campus in Nome. Outreach
includes reindeer husbandry education, animal health and disease, summer camps for
youth and adults in natural resources, and workshops in food preservation and traditional
Native crafts (introduction to tanning skins into leather, leather stitching, and
carving with antler, hoofs and bones).

A refresher on the skills learned in Level 1, such as sewing machine safety, maintenance, threading the machine, spooling a bobbin, stitch width and how to adjust the servo motor speed. During level 2, students will independently set up their machine, trace and cut leather using a given pattern of a luggage tag or mini wallet, and sew the project to completion.

Raising chickens in the backyard is a fun hobby and a great way to improve your food security in ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ. This class will teach you everything you need to get started with your own flock. We&/ces/districts/nome/39;ll cover breed selection, egg incubation, nutrition, coop design, disease management, and cold-weather tips.
This free class will be held in person at the ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Matanuska Experiment Farm and Extension Center, 1509 S. Georgeson Drive, Palmer, as well as via Zoom. Please use this or visit for either option.

Northern pike are native to ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ north and west of the ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Range, but were illegally introduced to Southcentral in the 1950s and have spread to over 150 waterbodies. As apex predators, pike have greatly altered many aquatic ecosystems. Parker Bradley, a biologist with the ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Department of Fish and Game, will go over background regarding invasive northern pike and highlight staggering statistics on the impact they have had so far in the Mat-Su Valley. He will also discuss some Fish & Game suppression and eradication projects, and research into how pike move through Cook Inlet.
